In 2009, Hurricane Ketsana (Ondoy) hit The Philippines and various other countries in Asia (Vietnam, Cambodia, China, Thailand & Laos). It displaced thousands, left many dead and has cost the above countries over $250M USD in damages.

The event(s) left an impact on many people worldwide and forever changed the lives of our family & friends, both home and abroad.

I took a look at my life, the lives of my friends and realized how fortunate we are to have clean water, a roof over our head and clothes on our back. We often take these things for granted, but it reassured me that we were all in a good position. A position that allowed us to not only provide for our family and friends, but to help others when needed.

The power of prayer is incredible, but I knew that we could do more..

I knew we had no choice, but to #RaiseItUp

With the help of many generous friends who donated their time, talent and money, we were able to raise over $2,300 for The Philippines and other affected countries.

On Friday, March 11th 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit Japan which triggered a tsunami killing thousands and causing a crisis at a local power plant.

CNN reports that the death toll is over 8, 600 and over 13, 200 are still missing. Although much is being done to find the missing and care for the injured, those numbers continue to rise.

Toronto, it is our duty as human beings to care for one another and lift each other up when we are down.

Please join us on Sunday, April 10th 2011 at 8pm as we #RaiseItUp

Cupcakes for Drake: The Best He Ever Had…

Our good friend, supporter and hip hop recording artist, Drake, hosted the Juno Awards in Toronto last night.  With SIX nominations, we were disappointed when he didn’t bring home any hardware…  but that’s okay.  We don’t need awards for recognition and to celebrate… The Cupcake Place cupcakes are pretty much all you need.  ;)

Drake got our Velvety Reds and Cocoa Beanie cupcakes… custom designed with trademarks he has come to be known for: the Young Angel (handpainted), Young Money logo (handpainted), and the OVO/ATF logos (done in handpainted fondant).

Boobs and Butts. Cupcakes, that is.

We had a um… ‘special’ request this weekend for birthday cupcakes.  – and there were no ‘butts’ about it (lol), that we could deliver on their cupcake vision.

KidKut and Trixx: 100% Aries

For as long as I can remember, KidKut has always been in and on top of the Toronto ‘urban’ scene… and no one can make you laugh as hard as Trixx: Toronto #1 Underground Comedian.  Last night, they celebrated their birthdays together at The Vue Nightclub… complete with The Cupcake Place cupcakes!  Can I also just say that The Vue has to be one of the most beautiful night clubs I have ever seen!

The focal cupcakes were our famous Velvety Reds topped with cream cheese icing lined with silver dragees.  They are finished with fondant discs with each of their names going across the front… in black and white… to match the design concept of the flyer.

I also couldn’t help but to do a microphone for KidKut.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

In Toronto, we are gearing up for this Thursday, March 17th: St. Patrick’s Day!  The city is officially kicking off the celebration with a good old fashioned parade!  Read about the annual parade here.

Of course, we were in an Irish kind of mood – and came up with special St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes… to compliment the green beer and milkshakes!  ;)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

~ and old Irish Blessing

Cupcakes for Japan

On Friday, March 11th, the whole world watched as tsunami waves triggered by a massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake made way to the shores and communities of Japan.  As of today, the death toll was confirmed at 686, but countless people are still missing and the numbers are sure to rise.  I cannot even imagine the suffering that the Japanese people are going through… the same type of suffering that Haiti experienced and is still dealing with after their earthquake just over a year ago.  It is so easy, especially in these times, to be thankful for what we have… clean water, food, a roof over our heads, health… and life itself.

We are all responsible for each other, and we would like to contribute to helping Japan rise above this catastrophe.  For the rest of the month, we will be raising funds to donate to the Canadian Red Cross.  We will be selling special fundraising cupcakes that are adorned with the symbolic red disc found on the Japanese flag.  The red disc symbolizes the sun as Japan is often referred to as the ‘land of the rising sun’.

For every dozen fundraiser cupcakes sold, The Cupcake Place will donate $5 to aid for Japan via the Canadian Red Cross.  Fundraising flavours are: Vanilla Beanie, Cocoa Beanie and Velvety Red.  Please email info@thecupcakeplace.ca for more information or to place your order.

If you would like to contribute without receiving cupcakes, we recommend donating through the Canadian Red Cross as it is a trusted and reputable humanitarian organization.

Be the change you want to see in the world.  ~ Mahatma Ghandi
